OPEN! FURNITURE is a project that, through fieldwork, furniture-making, and art events, seeks to discover the new possibilities of public space in Minato Ward, Tokyo. Collaborating with SHIBAURA HOUSE, Torafu Architects, and shop owners in Shibaura 3- and 4-chome, fieldwork and workshops were conducted that involved participation from all ages. From these events, ideas for furniture to use along the edge of the canal were developed. Using these ideas as the starting point, furniture was designed by Torafu Architects and produced by Ishinomaki Lab, such as a small table that could be affixed to a handrail, a slatted platform fitting snugly against the concrete steps for one to sit on, and a wooden surface to place atop existing bench seating as a makeshift veranda.
